Blurb~

Half-fae Lenox Pendry is surrounded by secrets and none are his to keep. Plucked from his mother’s arms as an infant and raised a changeling, Lenox grows to adulthood unaware of what and who he is and oblivious to the danger unfolding as his birthday draws near. After he’s unwittingly sent to the Scottish Lowlands out of harm’s way, he chances to meet a beautiful healer named Janet Roxburgh. The townspeople believe her to be a witch. It would appear Janet has a few secrets of her own.

Setting the Stage~
Lenox stops at an Inn in the Scottish Lowlands and there's excitement upstairs as a baby is born to the innkeeper's wife. When the midwife descends the stairs, Lenox suddenly feels Cupid's arrow.

My 10~
Shortly after, an angel descended the staircase. I lost the ability to breathe as an unidentifiable tingle swept me from head to toe.
She was quite fair with skin like fine oriental porcelain and features feminine and delicate. She was willowy and tall, taller than most women of my acquaintance and several of the men here, and I briefly wondered if she owed her height and coloring to Viking blood from the northern conquests generations before. I couldn’t determine the color of her eyes from where I sat, but her hair was so light a shade of blond my eye had to strain to be sure it wasn’t white. It was braided and in that plait, fell well below her hips. Unbound it might very well come close to the floor. The curl at the end and the sweat-damp ringlets framing her face suggested a natural wave. A fanciful image took me as I imagined what it might be like to sink my hands into the moonlit silk. She laughed at something someone said, and the genuine sound made me smile.

 5 Stars for The Changeling!
"Secrets abound as the story continues. I don’t want to retell the story here and this is already long enough. Suffice it to say this is a very well written, engaging, story with all sorts of deeper historical tidbits and storylines involving the characters, their family lines, and the townsfolk culture. Scenes are written vividly with date and culture appropriate dialogue that overall made this a delightful read right down the satisfying ending that ties all the pieces together."

Welcome facebook followers!

Hello Facebook followers! Welcome to Madeline Archer's blog. Madeline is my new pen name. While Rose Anderson writes the intimate side of award-winning romance and will continue to do so, Madeline writes the other flavors of fiction. It might be a sweeter love story, an otherworldly walk in the twilight zone, or something dark...

Today it's a bit from the sweeter side of my imagination.

Blurb~

Plucked from his mother’s arms as an infant and raised a changeling, Lenox grows to adulthood unaware of what and who he is and oblivious to the danger unfolding as his birthday draws near. Setting the Stage~
In the scene above, still oblivious to the looming danger he's in,
Lennox, now the new laird of Carterhaugh, makes the rounds to meet his late Uncle Charles' tenants. He discovers the generous and kind old fellow was loved by all. Uncle Charles wasn't half as his eccentric father Laird Dunnley Carter.

The Changeling~

November 1, 1867
Frances March hurried cautiously along the stable wall. So distracted by their conspiracy of mercy, she nearly jumped out of her shoes at the nicker of a horse. The sooner this deed was done, the better.
Pressing flat to the wall, she listened for the stableman, but heard only the muffled sound of stabled horses and the hoot of a distant owl. It was imperative that no one — upstairs or down —  see her. She peered around the corner and watched as her sister disappeared through the hedge. Pulling her shawl tightly around her and the bundle she held, she scurried across the gardens to the library and slipped inside quietly. The head butler was waiting.
He stated rather than asked, “You’re certain no one saw you . . . ”
With a nod she went to warm herself by the fire, her bundle held close. The grandfather clock in the hall struck one.
Osgood checked his watch against it. He pressed, “Did you explain to your sister she must never speak of this again?”
“Yes, Mr. Osgood. As I said before, Agnes says no one would believe the truth of it anyway. She’d be ridiculed…her reputation ruined. And there’s always the possibility she could be blamed for the other. It is unbelievable, no?”
“It is at that.” Osgood nodded. “I scarcely believe it myself, Fanny. What about the poor still babe?”
Her eyes brimmed with tears. “Agnes will see him to the cradle and hopefully none will be the wiser.     Mrs. Benton will think her own baby died and he’ll get a decent burial. And that’s pretty much the truth, isn’t it? Her own son is as good as dead. Poor, poor laddie, wherever he is now.” She crossed herself.
Osgood peered out into the night before locking the French doors and drawing the heavy curtains closed. “It’s as it should be.”
“Is it? Was it wise to switch them, Mr. Osgood? I mean, the baker and his wife —”
“— Had their child taken, with nothing to be done for it. They have seven living children to love, Fanny.    Her ladyship has four in the grave. Five now.”
Frances frowned. “Has her ladyship awakened?”
He shook his head. “Doctor Fischer administered a sedative. Lady Amelia was done out. She went to sleep believing her child alive and has no idea of the tragedy that occurred but half an hour later.”
“My poor lady. To go through that long labor and, in the end, the babe too weak to survive.” Emotion welling, Frances wiped her eyes. “What do you suppose they do with the babies they take?”
Osgood blinked his own sentiment away. “I can’t say. My old Welsh grannie said the fae only took the sickly ones. But back then it was only legend.”
“My Scottish gran told us the same,” Frances said, shaking her head. “But Agnes says Libby Benton’s baby wasn’t sickly but strong and healthy. Nearly every child of the Benton’s is as towheaded as their father, except for the two with the ginger hair like their mother. Agnes said Libby’s babe was destined to be ginger.”
Osgood went to the decanter and poured two small glasses of sherry. He handed one to her before downing his in one swallow. “Did your sister witness the switch?”
Frances sipped then shook her head. “When Agnes went to tidy the mother, she left the sleeping babe in the crib with no one to watch him. And, why would she think he needed to be watched? She helped bring the others into the world without fuss. It was minutes only that he was out of her sight. When she went back, another, with black hair, was in his place. That’s when she told Libby the babe was asleep and she should rest a while. So distressed was Agnes that she ran up to the hill to find me.”
He nodded. “It was fortunate she did. Another hour and everyone might have known.”
“Oh yes, it was fortunate. Libby’s husband was at the bakery mixing his dough, and the other children were sleeping up the stairs . . . one more child to such a large family brought little interest in him, you see.   There was no one to witness the deed. Will you be telling Mrs. Smithson?”
“No, Fanny. No one in this household, save you and I, will know. Of course Mrs. Smithson would keep the secret if I asked her to, but that isn’t necessary. We shan’t burden anyone else with the truth.”
Frances uncovered the bundle in her arms. Looking down, she smiled. “He’s a handsome laddie, don’t you think? I’m no expert, mind, but Agnes and I both suspect the babe is of mixed race. His little ears . . . ”
Moving to her side, Osgood broke into a smile of his own. The little bundled boy was sleeping. He ran a gentle fingertip over the small, slightly pointed ear. “Yes, he very well could be. And yes, he’s a handsome little man  — dark like Master Evan was. May his soul in heaven forgive us.”
The lady’s maid put a reassuring hand on the head butler’s arm. “He wouldn’t want her ladyship’s heart to be broken more than it already is. You know how he loved her.”
“I do,” he nodded. “As I see it, the baker’s child is no more, taken away to some faery hill no doubt, never to be seen again, if the old stories are true. This little boy did not belong with the Benton family anyway. He’s black-haired, for one. He’d grow being different, maybe disliked or mistrusted, even despised by his father as another man’s bastard. Danny Benton is a highlander. You know how they are — with their superstitions —  when they feel something isn’t quite right. The child would suffer for a situation not of his making. It harms no one that he be raised a Pendry.”
She nodded. “Yes, you’re right Mr. Osgood. If nothing else, this is the better life of the two.”
“It most certainly is. Master Evan is gone and Master John has been missing for a fortnight. Solicitors across London have been inquiring high and low for his whereabouts, but it isn’t looking good, Fanny.    Should anything have happened to Master John, there is no other heir living. This little man may very well become the 10th Earl of Pendry.”
To the babe, Osgood leaned down and whispered, “And the family name will continue because of you. Shall we meet your mummy little sir?”

Weekend Writing Warriors (HIS) (FA) #8sunday

It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors. Participants post 8-10 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished.

This is my first time participating from the blog belonging to my new pen name Madeline Archer. While Rose Anderson writes the intimate side of award-winning romance and will continue to do so, Madeline writes the other flavors of fiction. It might be a sweeter love story, an otherworldly walk in the twilight zone, or something dark...

Today it's another bit from the sweeter side of my imagination and it just released yesterday!

The Changeling

First my 10 with details after...

My uncle oversaw the enormous harvest’s end celebration and the smaller Mummers’ Fair. The latter saw him personally run the first head of cattle through the Beltane fires, fancy that. In short order I gained deeper insight and appreciation for my mother’s family out of ordinary pastimes. Apart from inherent generosity, the Carters were known for their eccentricity. Apparently Uncle Charles’s father, Dunnley, had this unconventionality in spades. The elders here fondly remembered him for the pocket of sweets he regularly doled out to them as children, but it was Dunnley’s pet raven, Rob Roy, that brought him renown. They told me the bird spent the day perched atop the old man’s flat-crowned hat, shatting down the elder's back.
From the extensive library I discovered the family was older than Selkirk itself. Their ancient Selgovae tribal roots were planted prior to the coming of the Romans and dug deep into Lowland turf thereafter. It didn’t take long to discover the Carter lands and the people on them had lives as intricately woven as Scottish plaid.

Welcome to a New Me

Hello, I'm romance author Rose Anderson. Welcome to a new blog and a new facet of my writing. This October will see two new works published under my brand new pen name ~ Madeline Archer. Madeline will go to literary places Rose has often dreamed of. More on that in a moment.

When I became a novelist, I jumped right in. It's a weird story really. I had been working on a wordy 5-book masterpiece for years (I call it my magnum opus or MO for short). When the end of the tale drew near, I began to fret. What if no one wanted to read it? What if I couldn't get a publisher to even take it on? I had experienced sad rejections back in the early 1990s when trying to get my children's books published. I mean, if publishers didn't want my adorable children's books, would they even want my adult fiction? Did I really want to go through all that self-esteem bruising again?

I determined what I really needed to do was to get inside the process so when the time came to pitch and publish my MO, I'd know what the heck I was doing. But how?

Well, something happened in the span of a week that set my feet on a different path. Several things came out of the blue to tell me just go for it, but not in any way I expected. First, my daughter asked me what I knew about ebooks. I knew nothing. Then later that same day I heard an interview on public radio that said ebook publishing was the next big thing. Two days later, I saw a TV interview with the guy who owns Amazon.com and he was talking about epublishing. The day after that I opened a writer's newsletter and the topic was epublishing. That same email listed opportunities for writers, one of which was an epublisher looking for unsolicited manuscripts from unagented authors. Unsolicited and unagented? I read it and thought that's me! The synchronistic bell rang in my head so loud I'm surprised my dogs didn't start barking.

There was a problem though--that publisher was looking for erotic romance. While I knew erotic romance was different from erotica, I didn't even write romance, let alone erotic romance. (My magnum opus is rather heavy fiction). Still, when the universe raps you on the forehead and says EPUBLISH in all caps, you just have to. It took exactly seven days to write an erotic romance about an online affair and I submitted it with fingers crossed. The story was accepted and I've been writing romance ever since.

Yes, Rose Anderson writes award-winning erotic romance and will continue to do so. But I also write children's and youth books, murder mysteries and high-concept fiction, as well as historical non-fiction. You just can't mix those genres. And that's where Madeline Archer steps in. Under Madeline's name I'll write the other flavors of adult fiction. As for my kids' literature and non-fiction... Rose and Madeline and I will keep you posted. One day I may even finish my magnum opus!
;)

I'm happy to announce Madeline Archer's debut with two fun projects available for pre-order on October 1st ~
