It's Sunday and time for the Weekend Writing Warriors . Participants post 8-10 sentences from a writing project, either published or unpublished.
Welcome! As Rose Anderson I write the intimate side of award-winning romance. As Madeline I write the other flavors of fiction. It might be a sweeter love story, an otherworldly walk in the twilight zone, or something dark... For today it's another bit from the sweeter side of my imagination ~ Heart of Stone.

First my 10 with details after~

Squaring her shoulders, Abigayle opened the door and called to Nicodemus. The bird swooped inside to land upon her shoulder. She lovingly scratched her raven’s head and told him through her tears, "Ye cannot save John nor me, dear friend, but ye can watch over my son. This charge I leave ye. Teach him all ye know as ye’ve taught me." The bird closed his eyes and rubbed his head against her cheek. Jumping out of the boot, Martin scurried over and smoothed her hair with his little paws.

Meeting her mother’s tear-streaked face with a brave smile, Abigayle said, "Please help me, Mama, the charm needs be set in stone to see these terrible times through."

So distraught was the pair, they forgot that the familiar spirits standing near would magnify their protective charm. To her great dismay, Finola would later discover that such a charm was unbreakable.

The story opens with the notorious witch hunts in 17th Century Salem, Massachusetts.

As formal education for women lacks substance in her own country, Neila Flannigan leaves Ireland in 1904 to attend Radcliffe women’s college America. Shy and introverted, Neila passes her lonesome hours sketching the Harvard grounds and sending drawings home to her father. A chance encounter with a kindly old Irish woman inspires her to sketch a statue in an old, unused building. Desperately lonely, Neila ends up sharing her thoughts and feelings with a man carved in stone. Some days it feels like he listens.

Setting the Stage~
In the scene above, Abigayle learns her husband John will be tried for witchcraft. He isn't a witch, but his wife is. A scry proves there is no hope and Abigayle learns she too will die. She explains it all to her mother and their familiar spirits before casting a protective spell on Abigayle's teenage son.

Half-fae Lenox Pendry is surrounded by secrets and none

are his to keep. Plucked from his mother’s arms as an infant and raised a changeling, Lenox grows to adulthood unaware of what and who he is and oblivious to the danger unfolding as his birthday draws near. After he’s unwittingly sent to the Scottish Lowlands out of harm’s way, he chances to meet a beautiful healer named Janet Roxburgh. The townspeople believe her to be a witch. It would appear Janet has a few secrets of her own.

Setting the Stage~
Unwittingly sent to the Lowlands of Scotland, Lenox oversees his uncle's estate. The first order of business is to meet the household staff one at a time. In this scene, he's just spent an hour becoming acquainted with Mrs. Frew the housekeeper of Carterhaugh. Mrs. Frew is surprised by the new laird, but not for any reason she could admit to.

My Six~

Glynnis Frew watched the door close after the young laird. Alone now, she called to mind events of twenty years before. A weary and worn traveler had come knocking, looking for work in exchange for a place to sleep. He appeared to be not more than forty years old and was a tall and fine-looking man with a scholarly bearing for all his tattered clothes. Kindly, Laird Charles took him in and the pair became fast friends. He soon saw the man situated in the village as the school headmaster. A handsome man, then as now, ladies from far and wide hoped to catch the headmaster’s eye, but only one did just that.

Young and willful Annabel Roxburgh, only sister to the earl on the neighboring estate, met the headmaster and fell in love and soon after found herself with child. She’d hid her pregnancy from everyone. The night she went into labor, her drunken brother became outraged. In his shame, he heartlessly cast her out into the snow. She’d walked miles to get this far. It was a miracle she survived the trek to Carterhaugh at all. Her babe was born here, and Annabel named her daughter Janet Eppa Roxburgh, with both the father’s name and hers, though the poor mother perished shortly after. Laird Charlie sent for the man, and how grief-stricken the headmaster had been as he keened over Annabel. Even the blind could see the love he felt for both mother and child. Earl Roxburgh refused the babe as his kin, despite all those who’d stood witness to his sister birthing the child. Soon, after the consolidations absorbed all of Selkirkshire, the earl burned the manse and killed himself. Janet was not legal heir to what was left — all she had was her mother’s name to say otherwise.

Sipping her tea, Glynnis recalled the day of the funeral, when Headmaster Eppa held his hands to her in thanks. That’s when she felt the rushing tingle run up her arm. She hadn’t felt such since she was a girl in the highlands, but she knew it for what it was. His white-blond hair was growing silver, true, but his face held not one wrinkle more than it did the night he came knocking those many years ago. Only then did she take note of the pointed ears he obviously tried to hide. The ears on wee Janet had slightly pointed tips as well. That, and the fact he hadn’t aged a day in twenty years, confirmed it to her mind. Headmaster Eppa was not of this world.

As a girl, she remembered her auntie bore a son much too soon and far too sickly to survive. She’d gone with her uncle when he placed the wee laddie upon a faery hill in the hopes the fae would take him away and make him well with their magic. He’d explained how the babe would never return, and said leaving him was the only hope for the child. Sure enough, come morning the sickly babe was gone and a hale and hearty changeling was in his place — a mixed-raced boy with slightly pointed ears. Auntie happily raised him as her own, for it meant the fae had her son and were doing the same. Owen she’d named them both.

Glynnis smiled. Many was the time she’d held wee Owen and each time he set her tingling from head to toe. It was a sensation one never forgot. The very tingle came from the headmaster’s touch the day of Annabel’s funeral, and the same came from Janet. Surprise of surprises, the tingling sensation also came from the hand of the new Laird of Carterhaugh. Glynnis had seen the young man’s ears today and they held the slightest point at the tips, just like Owen’s, just like Janet’s. Perhaps Laird Lenox was a changeling, a mixed race man of fae and human blood. She wondered if he knew what he was. Her guess was no. So many of their kind never knew, and those who did never talked.

Glynnis went to her desk and taking paper and pen from the drawer, wrote:

My Dear Master Eppa,

The new laird has come at last to Carterhaugh. As you are a man of letters, I believe he would be delighted to meet you. You will find him much like Laird Charles in temperament. You might also find him more than a match for your Janet.

My Fond Wishes,

She sealed the envelope and rang for a footman. The new laird was a fine man — neither superstitious nor close-minded. At last, a man worthy of Janet Roxburgh, and one able to restore her birthright.

The story begins with the 17th Century witch hunts of Salem, Massachusetts.

Setting the Stage ~
Between classes and studies, Neila spends her time in the unused building sketching the statue there. She begins with the stone kitten sitting on the stone man's lap. Oddly enough, the very same night she completes the kitten sketch, she stops to tie her shoe and meets a kitten...

My 8 ~
Crouching to tie it, she was surprise by a kitten brushing softly against her. Under the dim light of the gas lamp he appeared mostly black except for a few white splotches here and there. She reached to pet him. “Hello there, aren’t you the little charmer?”
The cat bumped against her hand and purred. Her hand tingled. Assuming it was tired muscles from all the writing and drawing, she flexed her fingers and petted him again. The night was far too chilly for a kitten to be out on his own.

At McPhee's Inn in the Lowlands of Scotland, a baby is born in the lodgings above the busy common room. McPhee, the proud father, calls for his daughter and sets shot glasses out on the bar to toast the birth of his son. Lenox, weary from traveling Scottish roads in the rain, takes in the happy scene. For Lenox, the world suddenly brightens...

My Six~
He called for the freckled girl, “Penny, yer mam’s given ye a baby brother! Come pass out th’ whiskey! I ha’ a new son, good people-- drinks on th’ house, all ‘round!”  

The customers cheered.

Shortly after, an angel descended the staircase. I lost the ability to breathe as an unidentifiable tingle swept me from head to toe.

This is my first time participating from the blog belonging to my new pen name Madeline Archer. While Rose Anderson writes the intimate side of award-winning romance and will continue to do so, Madeline writes the other flavors of fiction. It might be a sweeter love story, an otherworldly walk in the twilight zone, or something dark...

Today it's another bit from the sweeter side of my imagination and it just released yesterday!

The Changeling

First my 10 with details after...
     My uncle oversaw the enormous harvest’s end celebration and the smaller Mummers’ Fair. The latter saw him personally run the first head of cattle through the Beltane fires, fancy that. In short order I gained deeper insight and appreciation for my mother’s family out of ordinary pastimes. Apart from inherent generosity, the Carters were known for their eccentricity. Apparently Uncle Charles’s father, Dunnley, had this unconventionality in spades. The elders here fondly remembered him for the pocket of sweets he regularly doled out to them as children, but it was Dunnley’s pet raven, Rob Roy, that brought him renown. They told me the bird spent the day perched atop the old man’s flat-crowned hat, shatting down the elder's back. 
     From the extensive library I discovered the family was older than Selkirk itself. Their ancient Selgovae tribal roots were planted prior to the coming of the Romans and dug deep into Lowland turf thereafter. It didn’t take long to discover the Carter lands and the people on them had lives as intricately woven as Scottish plaid.

In the scene above, still oblivious to the looming danger he's in, Lennox, now the new laird of Carterhaugh, makes the rounds to meet his late Uncle Charles' tenants. He discovers the generous and kind old fellow was loved by all. Uncle Charles wasn't half as his eccentric father Laird Dunnley Carter.
